What to brief on, specifically for these premises

A helper who is excellent in an office is not automatically ready for a clinic or a hostel. The gap is almost always briefing, not ability, so be explicit about:

1. 1Your cleaning protocol and materials. Which disinfectant, what dilution, which surfaces, how often. Clinics usually have a standard already — hand it over on day one rather than assuming.
2. 2Waste segregation. What goes in which bin, and what she must never handle. Biomedical waste handling stays with your trained staff and your authorised disposal arrangement — say so clearly and in writing.
3. 3Confidentiality. She will see patients, hear names, handle paperwork on a desk. Spell out that nothing leaves the premises, the same as you would with any other staff member.
4. 4Zones. Which rooms she cleans, which she enters only when a staff member is present, and which she never enters.
5. 5Escalation. One named person she reports to, and what to do if something is spilled, broken or medically urgent — which is to call your staff, not to handle it.
6. 6Timings around sessions. Cleaning during an OPD queue helps nobody; agree the slots between sessions.

Two hours of proper briefing on day one is the difference between a placement that lasts two years and one that ends in three weeks. This is the single thing we would ask every clinic and hostel client to invest in.

Hostels and PGs: the extra considerations

• Residents' privacy — agree fixed cleaning hours for rooms and common areas, communicated to residents in advance.
• The weekend load is different — hostels are fullest exactly when offices are empty. Decide the weekly off accordingly.
