Every November the same thing happens in Ranchi. Your maid mentions, a little late, that she is going to the village for Diwali — and then Chhath is the week after, so she'll be back "after Chhath". That is 10 to 15 days without help, in the exact week you have guests, sweets to make and a house to keep clean. The gap itself isn't the problem. Finding out about it on Dhanteras morning is. This guide is the plan Ranchi families use to get through it calmly.
The 2026 dates that decide the gap
| Day | Date (2026) | What it means for your household |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Fri 6 Nov | Many helpers leave on or before this day |
| Diwali / Lakshmi Puja | Sun 8 Nov | Guests, puja, the busiest evening of the year |
| Bhai Dooj | 10–11 Nov | Family lunches; helpers still away |
| Chhath (Nahay Khay to Usha Arghya) | 13–16 Nov | Almost nobody from a Chhath-observing family is in the city |
| Return to work | 17–20 Nov | Most helpers back; some take an extra few days |
Plan for your maid to be away from around 5 November to around 18 November, unless she tells you otherwise. If she observes Chhath herself, assume the longer end.
Step 1 — ask for the dates this week, not next
The single most useful thing you can do is ask one clear question now: "Diwali-Chhath mein kab se kab tak chhutti?" Agree the dates, agree that it's paid festival leave (it usually is — see what's customary in our guide to Diwali bonus and leave for maids), and give the bonus before she travels rather than after. A helper who leaves with her bonus and a clear return date is a helper who comes back.
Step 2 — decide how much cover you actually need
Not every household needs daily cover for the full fortnight. Match the cover to the week:
| Situation | What works | Approx. cost (₹180/hr) |
|---|---|---|
| Small household, no guests | One big clean before Diwali, one after Chhath; manage the rest yourselves | ₹720 + ₹720 |
| Guests over Diwali week | Daily 2-hour slot (utensils, floors, bathrooms) from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj | ₹360 per day |
| Working couple, kids at home | Daily 2–3 hour cover for the whole 10–15 days, in her usual slot | ₹360–₹540 per day |
| Elderly parents alone | Daily cover plus a longer slot on puja days | ₹360–₹720 per day |
There's no registration fee and no monthly commitment for cover — you pay for the hours worked, and it stops the day she returns. Online bookings add a ₹99 booking fee by UPI to confirm the slot.
Step 3 — book the cover early; the week before Diwali is the busiest of the year
Here's the catch: the helpers who cover leave are also the helpers everyone wants for Diwali cleaning, and some of them travel for Chhath too. Book your cover before the end of October if you can. Tell us her usual timing and the work she does, and we send a verified helper for the same slot each day until she is back. For the deep clean itself, see the Diwali cleaning guide — it's usually a separate, longer booking.
Step 4 — make sure the gap doesn't turn into a resignation
A surprising number of maids don't come back after Chhath — not because they planned to leave, but because the household got annoyed, docked the leave, or quietly replaced her and she heard about it. Keep her slot for her, pay the bonus, and send one WhatsApp a day or two before the agreed return date. If she does decide to stay in the village, you'll know by 18–20 November — and that is actually the best week of the year to hire, because helpers are returning to the city and new ones are arriving after the harvest. Read why mid-November is the best time to hire a monthly maid in Ranchi.
How to book cover
- 1Call or WhatsApp +91-6204983837 with her usual timing, her work list and your area — or book online at dailydomestic.com/book for the first day.
- 2We confirm a verified helper (Aadhaar and address-verified, personally interviewed — the same staff we place on monthly plans).
- 3Pay for the hours worked to DailyDomestic after each day, never to the helper directly. Stop whenever your regular maid is back.
The households that sail through Diwali-Chhath are not the ones with the most help. They are the ones who asked "kab tak?" in October.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long are maids usually away for Diwali and Chhath in Ranchi?
Typically 10–15 days: leaving around Dhanteras (6 November 2026) and returning after Usha Arghya, the last day of Chhath (16 November 2026). Helpers who observe Chhath themselves tend to take the longer end.
Should Diwali and Chhath leave be paid?
In most Ranchi households, yes — the festival week is treated as paid leave on top of the monthly salary, and a Diwali bonus (commonly one month's salary) is given before she travels. Agreeing this in advance avoids the dispute later.
Can I get a replacement maid for the whole two weeks?
Yes. Tell us her usual slot and work, and we send a verified helper for the same timing each day until she's back, at ₹180/hour with a 2-hour minimum. There is no monthly commitment; cover stops the day she returns.
What if my maid doesn't come back after Chhath?
You'll usually know by 18–20 November. That is a good time to hire: helpers are returning to Ranchi and new ones arrive after the harvest. DailyDomestic places a verified monthly maid in 24–48 hours with a free replacement guarantee.
